 FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How accomplished a skier do I have to be?
A:
If you have some control over your skis and can stop, you can race. There are skiers on the Race Team who have just learned to ski, and people who have skied and raced for years. You will find many skiers who are at your ability level, so you will not feel out of place. We have even had racers who actually learned to ski in the racecourse.

Q: Why should I race?
A:
If you are fairly new to skiing, or if you want to rapidly improve your skiing ability, the race program will help you to turn and control your skis. If you are an experienced skier and bored with the local skiing scene, racing will put the fun and challenge back into Ohio skiing. Ask any racer, if racing has improved their skiing and the most popular answer will be, "absolutely!" "Racing makes skiing in Ohio Fun!

Q: What does the race program offer?
A:
The race program includes about 5+ practices. Conducted by the Mad River Mountain Racing Coaches, these practices concentrate on skiing and racing fundamentals. Beginners will get an introduction to racing. More advanced skiers will have their technique scrutinized and learn how to adapt it to racing. Races are held every weekend, typically from the last weekend in December to the first weekend in March. Participate as much or as little as you like. You are not required to be at every race or every practice. Let's not forget, the end of the year party where everyone gets a prize.

Q: When and where are the race practices?
A:
The practices are on most Friday nights during the skiing season at the Mad River Mountain Ski Area in Bellefountaine, Ohio. These practices are an hour and a half long, starting at 8:00 P.M. This year we will be continuing with a couple of Saturday morning practices during the season. Each lesson is taught by a Mad River Mountain racing coach, and is tailored to skiing ability. Check the race calendar for specific days and times.

Q: When and where are the races?
A:
There are races every weekend on both Saturday and Sunday. Most of the races are at Mad River Mountain. There may be a "Road Trip" race in addition to one weekend at Snow Trails. Check the Racing Schedule for the exact locations and times.

Q: What is expected of me when I join?
A:
The racing program is for your entertainment. You can do as much or as little of the program as you like. Of course, the more you do, the greater your enjoyment, and the better the value it is for you.

Q: How do I get to the races and practices?
A:
Transportation to each race and practice is your own responsibility. Many people car pool. A car pool sign-up list is started each race season. It is a good way to connect with some new racing buddies.

Q: Are lift tickets included?
A:
No. Since each person's commitment to racing varies, it is difficult to plan a lift ticket package to compliment the racing program. Lift tickets for each race and practice are your responsibility. Mad River Mountain offers season passes, weekend season passes, and discount coupon books. These may be economical alternatives for you. This year most of our races will be held at Mad River Mountain. This makes buying a season pass much more economical. In addition, traveling expenses will be limited to the short drive to Mad River Mountain. No more over-nights a million miles away!

Q: Which races count towards the CSR (Columbus Ski Club Ranking)?
A:
All CSC races listed on the Racing Schedule count towards the CSC ranking provided there are enough qualified Columbus racers present who finish the race to establish a par time. If the race will not count toward your CSC ranking, it will be noted on the schedule.
