Polo Match Tips & Fun Facts
Cheer and clap—the horses are used to it!
Halftime tradition: Walk onto the field and help replace divots kicked up by the horses. Great time for photos and socializing.
Wear casual shoes—the field may be muddy and contain horse manure.
Bring a picnic: Finger foods, fruit, charcuterie, snacks, and beverages work well.
Match format: Four chukkers (periods), about 7 minutes each.
Common polo horses: Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses, and ponies from Argentina and other polo-playing countries.
The goal: Hit the ball through the goal posts. Teams switch ends after each goal.
